Bach – St John Passion

Exeter Cathedral 1, The Cloisters, Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom

Exeter Chamber Choir, Players and soloists present J.S. Bach’s dramatic telling of the crucifixion of Jesus as told in the Gospel of St. John. It's a powerful and moving piece that combines elements of drama, reflection, and worship. Bach masterfully weaves together different musical styles, creating a rich and complex tapestry that draws the listener in. From the urgent, restless opening through to the sublime final chorus and transcendent chorale, the musical evocation of this dramatic story brings us face to face with some of the most fundamental questions in life. As may have happened in Bach’s day, the audience will be invited to join in the singing of the chorales, the hymn tunes that punctuate the work. English texts and music for these will be included in a free programme booklet, to enable this audience participation and a deeper involvement with the whole musical and dramatic experience, whilst the choir and soloists will sing the rest of the work in the original German.
