Easter Contemplations
In our Lenten concert this year we present food for the soul, a feast of atmospheric and sonorous music to contemplate Christ’s passion.
Experience the thrill of old and new, with an a cappella programme that spans the centuries, from the famous “Crucifixus a 8” by Antonio Lotti, to James MacMillan’s “Miserere”, his own powerful interpretation of the text made famous by Allegri, which has already been acknowledged as a modern masterpiece. Motets by Victoria, Bruckner and Pablo Casals provide additional variety and the first half concludes with René Clausen’s ravishing arrangement of Sheppard’s “In Pace”. In the second half we enter a distinctively eastern-european sound-world with extracts from Alexander Gretchaninov’s “Passion Week”, a choral work rarely heard in this country although a monumental standard in the Russian Orthodox Church’s celebration of Easter. Add to this the stunning, resonant acoustic of Buckfast Abbey, and you have an aural feast worthy of some contemplation.
